More About Bluffton
The town motto, "Bluffton is a State Of Mind", well represents the work ethic, determination, dedication, and welcoming attitude residents demonstrate. The area was first settled in 1718, and the pleasant breezes, perfect climate, easy water access and high ground offered an escape from many of the unhealthy conditions lower ground settlements experienced. In 1844, planters around Bluffton were angered by tariffs imposed by the Federal Government, which made the goods they imported from abroad excessively expensive. Out of the discontent, the "Bluffton Movement" was born, and incensed planters gathered beneath what became known as the "Secession Oak" and thus the secessionist movement was born.
